PROFESSOR JOSH SAILS:  A 35-year-old handsome, confident, eccentric guy with a traditional dorky scientific side.  He has a Ph.D. in iconographic mathematics from Maryland University, where he continues to work as a professor, and is renowned in his field.  His work is his life.  He is scientifically grounded, but has longed for evidence of God his entire life.  Will he find what he’s looking for when he begins uncovering the accuracies in the Bible Code?  The closest thing to a relationship that he has is with his research assistant, Amanda, who is a single lesbian.  He is an only child and both of his parents live in Boston.  His mother had a stroke a few years back and is partially paralyzed, but still has full intellectual functioning.  Josh and his mother are incredibly close.  She instilled spirituality in him, while his father was the more fact and reality-based parent.

AGENT KATHERINE ELIZABETH NATAN:  A 33-year-old special agent for the N.S.A. with exceptional problem-solving skills.  Her birth mother died while delivering her and her real father was never involved in her life.  She was placed in several foster homes until the age of ten, when a retired navy officer and his wife adopted her.  A year later her adoptive mother was killed in a car accident.  Natan’s adoptive father raised her by himself.  Natan went to college, majoring in psychology and minoring in philosophy.  Her father got cancer a few months before she was to finish her graduate degree in criminal science.  Two weeks after graduating with her master’s degree, her adoptive father died.  Natan took it very hard, but kept it all inside.  She is a tough cookie.  She relies solely on herself and is ridiculously private.  She takes her work very seriously, but also has a wonderful sense of humor and quick wit.  She has had supernatural experiences her entire life (sensing things, heightened intuition, messages in her dreams), but is in denial about this fact, until she meets Professor Sails and is forced to reconcile her own demons and gifts to help save the world.

AMANDA CLARK:  A 28-year-old, research assistant for Josh.  She’s getting her Ph.D. in mathematics.  She is a single lesbian.  Through her friendship with the professor, will she get pulled into the Code drama by Josh and Natan as an adversary or ally?  Amanda often talks about her brother, who is a soldier fighting in the Iraq war.  Her brother is an electrical specialist and, while he’s away, lets Amanda use all of his cool equipment, like the G.P.S. spotted in Chapter One of Book One.  Amanda’s most interesting characteristic is that she has a grandiose fascination with a female soul singer, Riana Ball, from the 50’s and 60’s.

SECTION CHIEF MARSH:  A 48-year-old retired Marine who is punctual to a fault, down to the second, often antagonizing those around him for being late.  He can be as hard as nails, but also has a great sense of humor.  He has immense respect for Natan and, in a small sense, resembles a father figure to her.  He has an incredible work ethic and secretly loves it when the underdog wins.  He values honesty and integrity beyond everything.  He got his job through dedication and hard work and he plays by the book, always.

HEAD OF THE NSA, JAMES BAXTER:  A 53-year-old ex-attorney with an ego the size of Texas.  He trusts no one and is happy to have underlings doing all the work.  He is out to get Natan, simply because she excels.  He got his job through political connections and is undeserving of the position.  He is always out for only himself and can usually be found teetering on the line of the unethical.

AGENT ROB KNIGHT:  A 29-year-old rookie agent who has been working with Natan a short time.  He seems green, but finds his way around the N.S.A. nicely.  Knight’s quirk is that he is obsessively neat.  He is charming and alluring to most women.  Will Natan fall prey to his irresistible wiles?

AGENT ALICE WARREN:  A 50-year-old desk agent for the N.S.A.  She used to be a field agent like Natan, vying for the job as head of the N.S.A., but now handles internal dealings with the N.S.A.  She was good friends with Natan’s father and got Natan interested in working with the government.  She looks out for Natan and is the only person allowed to call Natan by her first name.  Alice keeps unauthorized tabs on all of the internal N.S.A. workings and is often privy to information that would otherwise be unavailable, which she uses to her advantage.  Her retirement looms and Natan isn’t looking forward to it.

CHRISTINE JACOBS:  A 47-year-old, professional therapist, Ph.D., hired by Natan to help her work through her past, particularly her father’s death.  When Christine finds out about Natan’s gifts she helps her embrace and understand them.  She is a closeted new age therapist focusing on hypnotherapy, dream and regression work, along with body-centered therapies.  All outward appearances show her to be a typical traditional psychologist.

CONGRESSMAN KENT BRADSHAW:  A 39-year-old congressional official who heads a tactical subcommittee.  He is a friend of Josh’s family and also has ties to Agent Marsh.  He gets dragged into the mix by helping Josh get out of Mexico with the originating call to Marsh.

EVALYN SAILS:  Josh’s mother is a 58-year-old vibrant, loving woman who adores her only son immensely.  She firmly believes in God and sees life as the utmost precious gift.  She is exceptionally positive and has instilled that in her son.  Even after a paralyzing stroke leaves her in a wheelchair, dependent on others, she emerges with this positive, enduring spirit.

JACK SAILS:  Josh’s father is a 61-year-old retired orthopedic surgeon, who now devotes his life to taking care of his paralyzed wife.  His two passions are sailing, which he does as often as he can in and around Boston, and the Red Sox.  He is a fact-based man who loves puzzles and riddles, which rubbed off on Josh.  He is agnostic, bordering atheist, but allows his wife to indulge in her own religious/spiritual beliefs.  He is exceptionally proud of his son’s success in the mathematics field.
